| The Al Noor Training Center |
Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs opened its doors in Dubai on November 21st, 1981, starting with only eight children. Currently the Centre serves 265 children and look forward to accommodating up to 300 children in the new facility. The Centre runs under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Affairs. An appointed Board of Governors formulate the governing policies, which are then implemented by the Director of the Centre. Rotary Club Jumeirah has become involved in the Child sponsorship Program which is an integral part of the fundraising activity of Al Noor Training Centre for Children with Special Needs. It has been set up to aid the parents of children in the Centre who are financially challenged and therefore, are unable to provide the full tuition fees. Our Club has also sponsored a large fish tank in the recreation area for the children. Total Funding 15,000AED |

| The Emirates Environmental Green Globe tree planting Project |
Rotary Club Jumeirah in support of the billion tree campaign assists EEG (an accredited member of UNEPs governing council) pledged to plant 1 million trees throughout UAE by the end of the year 2007. The pledge was in step with EEG’s policy to combat global warming and mitigate the impact of human actions on the environment. It is proven beyond doubt that global warming and the associated climate change has been the one resolute factor that has played a key role in the recent series of worsening weather patterns all over the world. It is therefore imperative to recognize the burgeoning issue of climate change. Rotary Club Jumeirah was offered the unique opportunity to pledge indigenous trees with the UNEP One Billion Tree Campaign, through EEG. We will assist in planting more trees in June of 2010. |

| The Labor Camps project with Saher Shaikh |
Rotary Club Jumeirah and Dubai residents turned out in their droves at The Shelter in Al Quoz to lend a hand packing care boxes for workers in Dubai’s labor camps. Word about the event spread through Twitter and Facebook, and a nameless group of individuals from all nationalities and walks of life came together at the given time and place, headed up by one woman, Saher Shaikh.
The logistics of the operation is staggering. In total 2,000 care packages containing basic hygiene and food items, towels, bed sheets and prayer mats for Muslims, and 1,000 mattresses and pillows will be distributed to labor camps in Jebel Ali, Dubai Investment Park and Ajman. About 240 volunteers including Rotarians and Rotaractors signed an impromptu register but the actual number of people in who helped out over the course of the day was in excess of 300. Six months of assessing camps, liaising with camp supervisors and canvassing laborers to find out which items are most needed, have gone into the effort. It’s hard to believe that all this has happened through one person’s determination.
Saher Has just started assisting with getting the Laborers to English lessons at the American University in Dubai and Rotary Club Jumeirah has donated the Monies for the transport for the next 3 months.

Rotarians Urs Stirnimann, Donal Kilalea, Ishu Rupani, Jan Willem Ven Es and his son, and visiting Rotarian from the UK, Salvatore Cassar volunteered to accompany the children from Senses School for physically and mentally disabled children during their excursion to Al Nasr Club for a day of swimming and laughter on Saturday morning, July 11th, 2009.
“The morning was such an enjoyable one, I think not only for the students but for us as well. It is humbling and so gratifying that we can help in this way and also it was great fun as I hope this photo shows”, commented Vice President Donal Kilalea.
The Rotary Club of Jumeirah has taken a keen interest in the Senses School, first introduced by Rotarian Virginie Amehame, and along with her a committee was formed including Rotarians: Monja Gut, Urs Stirnimann, Frank O’Sullivan, and Donal Kilalea.
The children from Senses would like to continue to go one these excursions, and this can only be possible with help of volunteers. If you or some one you know is interested to volunteer, kindly get in touch with Rotarian Monja Gut and expressing your interest. You may reach her on: rcjumeirah@live.com
Joint Project for Al Noor - June 7, 2009
Partnership with the EEG and the 1 million tree planting campaign
Jumeriah Rotary, sponsored the planting of indigenous trees at the Safa School for boys., in Dubai, in association with the Emirates
Environmental group.
This all formed part of the United Nation's Environmental Programme's Billion Tree Campaign, aimed at planting trees to reverse the damaging effects humans have on the environment. Emirates Environmental Group pledged to plant 1 million trees as part of this worldwide campaign in 2007 and, having already surpassed that target last year, decided to extend their efforts into 2008.
Members of Jumeirah Rotary Club joined EEG staff as well as teachers and pupils of Safa School in getting their hands dirty for the first planting in the school grounds. There was specific emphasis on planting only indigenous trees as these can tolerate the salinity and scarcity of water in the region.
Jumeirah rotary micro financing fund for Afghanistan
A partnership between the Jumeirah Rotary Club, Dubai, Planet Finance UAE and Sunduq has been established to stimulate small rural businesses in Afghanistan and help families to fight the poverty cycle.
The first-time project will aim to reduce poverty among the rural areas of Afghanistan by developing sustainable agriculture through the creation of a micro fund.
Funded by the Jumeirah Rotary Club, Dubai, the project will see Sunduq, a microfinance institution in Jalalabad, disburse new loan products
to Afghan farmers in order for them to develop new cultivations.
The micro-loan products do not exist in Afghanistan but are urgently required to help the rural micro-entrepreneurs diversify their activities and stay away from poppy cultivation. The new loans will help them to generate and increase their income activities and will help to improve the conditions of living standards for their families.
The microfund, managed by PlaNet Finance UAE, will start in April with US $35,000 donated by the Jumeirah Rotary Club of Dubai.
"This is only the beginning," said Hussain Al Jaziri, President of the Jumeirah Dubai Rotarians.
"The aim is in fact to collect more funds in order to increase the size of the micro fund to
US $300,000, meaning that more than 1,500 micro-entrepreneurs will be helped every year." |
